Matakitaki River, Murchison

Project Info

Client: TDC and NZTA

Project Description

The Matakitaki river works was a joint TDC and NZTA job to protect the SH6 bridge over the Matakitaki river and decrease the impact on surrounding areas during flood events in Murchison. Along with an estimated 78,000m3 volume of gravel removed from the river more than 5000 ton of rock was placed in the channel for bank protection. Rock rip rap protection walls were constructed under both ends of the bridge to protect the bridge abutments. Spur groynes were also placed on both banks upstream to help direct the river under the centre of the SH6 bridge.
