Great progress has been made on the Sheffield Storage Pond.
The pond is approximately 100 acres in size, holds 2.15 million m3 of water and irrigates 4,300 hectares of farmland. The original cut to fill quantity was 496,995m3 and topsoil/silt 214,941m3. Due to compaction factors and additional ballast requirements the cut quantity increased to 584,994m3, with a new total earthworks of 799,935m3.
The main embankment should be finished Mid July, excluding a 40,000m3 wedge over the outlet pipe (still under construction). 100,000m2 of approx. 300,000m2 of HDPE liner is completed, with 20 km of distribution pipeline laid. The Waimakariri Intake, while small by earthworks standards, has caused some delays due to being constructed within a protected wetland with significant subsurface influence from the Kowai River. This has lead to multiple design changes and relocation of intake infrastructure.
At this stage project completion is programmed for the 30th September with handover to the client the 1st October 2017.
