Optimising Vineyard Landscapes
When it comes to shaping and moving ground on vineyards, Taylors Contracting has found it’s in demand not only for their quality work, but also for their specialist advice.
The company has been steadily growing its reputation in Marlborough over the past three years thanks to client recommendations. Taylors Contracting Division Manager Nick Mayall says vineyard owners are happy to get the free advice that Taylors experience can offer.
“Our business is about providing cost-effective land development. With our knowledge of land and of what our machines can achieve, we can quite often increase land efficiency and options that the landowner might not have considered. What we’d say to vineyard owners is if you have a vision of what you’d like, talk to the experts.“ Taylors say sometimes vineyard owners will have a development idea and discount it as too expensive. “We come and talk about it and price up the best option and it suddenly becomes viable,” says Nick Mayall.
Taylors have done extensions, new vineyards, dams, new developments, headlands, and road building and maintenance on a variety of vineyards from the large corporates to small family ones. As well as their ability to visualize land outcomes, Nick says their machinery size, technological aids and operator experience give them a competitive edge. “Our dozers are set up with GPS and site vision. For ripping, our most popular tractor is heavier than most people use and with longer tines to give us an advantage in ripping depth. That means we can guarantee the 800mm depth that most people require.” Nick says they have even been called in to complete ripping work that other contactors couldn’t complete. With a new Taylors depot in Renwick, plus their head office in Brightwater, near Nelson, Nick says they can offer land moving expertise to vineyards across the top of the south. “We take the time to understand what the client needs. As a family run business, it’s just our nature to always look for the most effective method and the best outcome whether it’s based on bang for buck or risk management, either environmental or construction.”
