Landscaping Projects benefits Brightwater Community
A project that is combining the skills and resources of local businesses, the Department of Conservation and local school children has just begun at Snowdens Bush Reserve in Brightwater.
The 5.6 hectare reserve is an important part of local history. Although severely modified, Snowdens Bush is an example of a lowland forest that once covered much of the Waimea Plains. It is dominated by Totara, Titoki and Matai, and since grazing was stopped in 1972, a varied cover of smaller native plants has developed.
The project aims to remove pest plants and re-plant with natives that would have grown here naturally. The first part of the project is to remove a large 3 metre high Barberry hedge and the 20 tonne digger and grapple is the ideal machine for the task.
The hedge is a pest plant and Taylors Contracting Ltd has supplied a digger and staff to remove it. Taylors Contracting Supervisor Arnie Richards says the wet weather through October has put back the start date, but they’ve now been able to get a full day to remove it. “We’re used to ripping out hedges but this one is well established so we needed a big machine to tackle it.” Now the hedge is out and once the ground is prepared there will be a planting day on Friday 13th of November with Brightwater School. DoC staff will be assisting and will give the children an enviro-schools session. The sponsors of the project, including Fonterra and Taylors will be present to help and support the landscaping. Fonterra will be providing a BBQ lunch for all helpers. Steve Veix, Takaka/Brightwater the Safety and Environmental Team Lead –for Fonterra has been organizing the project and he says it reflects a fantastic community spirit in Brightwater.
“The businesses who have supported this project believe in giving something back to the community they’re based in. It’s a very worthwhile project that not only enhances a popular picnic area but is also educating our community and children about conservation.”
